William Campbell Gallery is pleased to present a special summer exhibition celebrating the work of Richard Thompson. On view from May 27 through June 20, 2026, this limited engagement brings together a carefully curated selection of Thompson’s paintings — spanning decades of artistic evolution, from intimate still lifes to sweeping landscapes of the American West.
Born in 1945 and based in Oregon, Richard Thompson (1945–2021) built a career of rare depth and consistency over more than five decades. Beginning in the 1960s with a visual vocabulary rooted in landscape and still life, his paintings grew from a lifelong attentiveness to the world around him — the rural terrain of the American West, its distant horizons, far-away mountains, geometric field patterns, and farm buildings rendered with the quiet precision of still life elements set against a wide, open sky.
Thompson’s work earned significant national and international recognition throughout his lifetime. He was included in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Art Biennial in both 1975 and 1981, and his paintings have been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, the Portland Art Museum, and the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, among many others. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, the San Antonio Museum of Art, the Portland Art Museum, and the Edinburg Museum of Modern Art in Scotland, as well as numerous private and corporate collections across the United States.
In addition to his studio practice, Thompson enjoyed a distinguished thirty-year academic career, serving as Dean of the School of Art and Design at Alfred University in New York and as Professor of Painting at the University of Texas at Austin. He passed away in 2021, leaving behind a body of work of extraordinary range and enduring resonance.
This exhibition represents a singular oppportunity for collectors and admirers of Thompson's work. The works on view are available for acquisition exclusively during the run of the exhibition - after June 20, they will be headed to the Artist's Estate.
